Dobrich region consists of eight municipalities: Dobrich, Balchik, Shabla, Kavarna, Tervel, General Toshevo and Krushari. The region is set on the North-eastern Bulgaria in the Danube plain on the Dobrudzha plateau. It borders Republic of Romania on the North, The Black Sea on the East, Varna region on the South, Shumen region on the South-west and Silistra region on the West. The checkpoints at Durankulak and Yovkovo are on the territory of the region.
Climate
The Danube plain features with low-lying and hilly table-land. The climate conditions are similar to the East European climate conditions. The most essential features of the climate are the small quantity of rain, the cold winter and the hot summer. The most important climate characteristics of The Black Sea sub region are the mild wet winter and hot, dry and sunny summer.
Two considerable deposits of ores and minerals are located in the territory. The biggest manganese deposit in Europe is next to villages Oborishte and Tsarkva. Two local limestone-pits are working in the territory of the region, too. The region comprises with several mineral springs.
Transport
The road and communication net of the region is in excellent repair and gives access to all points of the region and the other parts of Bulgaria. The main roads to The Black Sea, Romania, Poland, Ukraine and Russia pass through it. The railway line city of Konstantsa /Romania/-city of Varna /Bulgaria/ connects Russia, Ukraine and Moldova with Turkey. Important parts of the region are the coast towns of Balchik, Shabla and Kavarna.
Town of Balchik is one of the main coast towns in the region of Dobrich. It is a small town, situated on the North Black Sea and outstands with its authentic town architecture and its beautiful location on the terraced relief of the Balchik gulf. The boardwalk of the town is encircled by a long alley, full with entertainment places and restaurants. The biggest attraction is the old Palace - a villa of a Romanian queen. Its beautiful botanic garden is one of the richest exotic plant species of the Balkan Peninsula. Except the Palace, a lot of authentic houses in Bulgarian revival style are transformed into historical and ethnographic museums. The Art Gallery and its rich collection are situated in a contemporary building in an old style.
