The district with the administrative centre of Pleven is located in the central part of Northern Bulgaria. To the North it borders with the Danube River, to the West – Vratsa district, to the East – Veliko Tarnovo district, to the South – Lovech district. The region of Pleven is the centre of eleven municipalities: Belene, Gulyantsi, Dolna Mitropolia, Dolni Dabnik, Iskar, Levski, Knezha, Nikopol, Pleven, Pordim and Cherven Bryag. The district of Pleven has a territory of 4 653.3 sq. km, which represents 4.2% from the territory of the country. According to the percentage of the areas with economy usage, which is 5.4%, the district of Pleven is the fourth one in the country after Dobrich, Burgas and Plovdiv. The climate in the district of Pleven is moderate-continental. The average temperatures in January are -2 to -3C degrees, the average temperatures in July +23C degrees.
Transport
The main transport roads connecting the territory of the region with the rest regions of the country are the railway lines Sofia - Varna with its intercept Cherven bryag - Gorna Oriahovitsa, Svitshtov - Troyan and the first-classed roads from Sofia to Varna and Ruse. Roads leading to South Bulgaria are also available. The reason for the development of the infrastructure is the outlet of Danube river which is 72km long. Four operational harbours are at the territory of the region - town of Nikopol, village of Somovit, village of Zagrazhden and village of Baikal. Checkpoin Somovit is at Danube river.
Economics
The economical development of Pleven region characterizes with great diverisity. Pleven region has gained experience at the following industries: chemical, textile, food, machinery construction, vegetable production and informational tourism. The extraction of petroleum in village of Dolni Dabnik is the main production of the region. At Danube river has begun the construction of the second atomic electrical centre Belene. For the moment the construction is suspended.
The region is well-known for its abundant agricultural production because of its wonderful moderate climate.
Tourism
Pleven district is famous for its rich cultural-historical heritage and wonderful nature. There are great conditions for development of cultural, ecological and balneological tourism. City of Pleven has a thousand long history. The evidences are the numerous cultural and architectural monuments in the city. 'Green zone' is made around city of Pleven about 25 000 decars, including Kailaka, General Lavrov, General Gentski, etc. Valchitran is also on the territory of the region. It is only 22km South-east from the town. The Valchitran gold treasure had been found there. Town of Dolni Dabnik comprises a lot of monuments from the Pleven epos. It is 15km West from city of Pleven. Natural gas is also extracted there. The three lakes in the vicinities of Dolni Dabnik are some of the favourite relaxation places for the citizen of Pleven. Water sports, water tourism and fishing are some of the activities that can be practiced in the region.
